Mabalingwe Nature Reserve is more than just a wildlife retreat; it is a place where nature, family, and fun come together in perfect harmony. The very name Mabalingwe carries the essence of the reserve’s identity. Back in the day, the SeTswana words “mabala a nkwe” were melded and reshaped to form Mabalingwe, meaning “Spots of the Leopard.” True to its name, the reserve is dotted with unique experiences, just like the leopard’s spots, ensuring that every visitor encounters something special – whether it be breathtaking wildlife, stunning landscapes, or cherished family memories in the heart of nature.
Humble Beginnings: From Farmland to Sanctuary
The story of Mabalingwe began in 1972 when the Wessels family established Boschpoort, a 2,141-hectare farm primarily used for cattle and maize farming. At that time, the land was home to kudu and impala, thriving in the bushveld habitat. However, in 1987, Basie Wessels had a vision – to transform this farm into a premier wildlife and holiday destination. This idea took shape in 1988 with the completion of the first ten chalets, marking the birth of what we now know as Mabalingwe Nature Reserve.
Expanding the Wilderness
A commitment to conservation and biodiversity led to the introduction of various wildlife species. In 1989, key species such as hippopotami, southern white rhinoceros, black rhinoceros, and sable antelope were introduced. The reserve continued to grow, acquiring neighbouring farms like Gorcum and Olievenfontein in 1994, further expanding the natural habitat.
One of the most significant moments in Mabalingwe’s history came in 1996, when elephants facing culling in Kruger National Park were relocated to the reserve. This not only added to Mabalingwe’s growing wildlife population but also reinforced its role in conservation efforts.
A Haven for Wildlife and Family Adventures
Mabalingwe is all about getting back to nature – the vast 12,500-hectare landscape allows visitors to immerse themselves in the raw beauty of the South African bushveld. The reserve is home to abundant birdlife, diverse indigenous trees and shrubs, and an impressive variety of wildlife.
But what sets Mabalingwe apart is its dedication to family-friendly experiences. More than just a wildlife sanctuary, it has been carefully designed to offer a holiday experience where family is at the heart. With guided game drives, self-drive safaris, and kid-friendly activities, every visitor, young or old, can experience the wonders of the bush while creating lasting memories.

A Modern-Day Bushveld Retreat
Over the years, Mabalingwe has developed exceptional facilities, catering to guests seeking relaxation, adventure, or both. With a variety of lodges, chalets, and private accommodations spread throughout the reserve, visitors can enjoy comfort while staying close to nature. The reserve also features facilities such as restaurants, swimming pools, and the luxurious Mbali Day Spa, ensuring that every stay is as enjoyable as it is immersive.
A Legacy of Conservation and Tourism
Today, Mabalingwe stands as a beacon of successful conservation and sustainable tourism. What began as a modest farmland has evolved into a sprawling wildlife sanctuary where nature thrives, families bond, and adventure awaits. True to its name, the reserve remains a place filled with “Spots of the Leopard” unique encounters, unforgettable sights, and the undeniable spirit of the wild.
From its origins to its present-day status as one of South Africa’s beloved nature reserves, Mabalingwe continues to celebrate its heritage while looking ahead to a future of conservation, family experiences, and boundless adventure in the bushveld.
