When temperatures soar, vultures utilize a biological process known as urohidrosis. In simple terms, vultures deliberately excrete liquid waste directly down their own legs. While it sounds thoroughly unpleasant to us, it serves a critical evolutionary purpose:
- Evaporative Cooling: Just as humans sweat to cool off, the liquid on a vulture’s legs evaporates in the dry bush breeze. Because their lower legs are unfeathered and packed with blood vessels, this evaporation quickly cools the circulating blood, effectively lowering their core body temperature.
