Ranger Diaries: How to Spot a Dangerous Snake

The African bush is alive with movement, from the graceful leap of an impala to the slow, steady rhythmic flapping of an elephant’s ears. But some of our most fascinating residents are a little harder to spot and often misunderstood. We get asked all the time: “How do I know if a snake is venomous?”.

While most snakes would much rather avoid a human encounter than start one, it’s always helpful to know what to look for when you’re exploring the wild.

The Scale of the Situation

One of the first things to look at when identifying a snake is its size. Generally speaking, larger snakes are more likely to be venomous. While there are always exceptions in the wild, a substantial length is often your first clue that you should give the creature a wide, respectful berth.

A Warning in Colour

Nature has a brilliant way of using paint to send a message. When observing a snake from a safe distance, take note of its colouration and any distinct patterns.

Specifically, keep an eye out for broad bands on the body. These bold, clear markings are often nature’s way of saying “handle with care” – if a snake features these prominent bands, it’s definitely one of the more dangerous species you might encounter.

Your Digital Field Guide

Even with these tips, identifying snakes in the heat of the moment can be tricky. If you’re ever unsure about a slithering neighbour you’ve spotted, there’s a fantastic tool available to help. We recommend downloading the ASI (African Snakebite Institute) app.

This app is like having a pocket-sized ranger; it can tell you exactly which snakes are common in your specific region and whether or not they are venomous. It’s an essential download for any nature lover heading into the bushveld.
